Video to GIF
A video to GIF converter cuts a short piece out of a clip and saves it as an animated GIF that plays on its own, loops forever and works almost everywhere: chats, forums, email, slides and comment threads. Here you drop in a video, drag two handles on the timeline to pick the moment, and choose the width, frame rate and speed. You can play it backwards or as a boomerang, crop it to square or 9:16, and put a caption on it in classic meme letters. The tool estimates the file size before you export, so you can stay under a chat's limit. It also works as a GIF maker for photos: add several pictures and they become a slideshow GIF with optional crossfades. Everything runs in your browser, with no upload, no account and no watermark.
Questions
How do I turn a video into a GIF?
Upload the video, drag the two handles on the timeline to the moment you want, then press Make GIF. The defaults (480 px wide, 15 frames per second, normal speed) already make a good reaction GIF, and you can download it right away.
How long can the GIF be?
Up to 30 seconds and 450 frames per GIF. Shorter is better: a 3 second clip at 15 fps is 45 frames and usually lands between 1 and 3 MB at 480 px wide.
How do I make the GIF file smaller?
Lower the width, the frame rate or the clip length, or choose Small file under Quality. The size estimate above the button updates as you change settings, so you can see the effect before exporting.
Can I make a GIF from photos instead of a video?
Yes. Add two or more images and the tool switches to a slideshow GIF. Set how long each image stays on screen, turn on Crossfade for smooth transitions, and drag the thumbnails to change the order.
Is it free, and is my video uploaded?
It is free with no sign-up and no watermark. The frames are read and encoded by your own browser, so your video stays on your device. It is only uploaded if you choose Send to, to keep working on the GIF in another PopNow app.
Can I put text on the GIF?
Yes. Type a caption and pick Classic, Modern, Rounded or Marker letters, the position and the size. Classic is the white text with a black outline that most memes use. For top and bottom text on a still picture, use the meme generator.
What frame rate should I use for a GIF?
15 fps is a good default and close to how most GIFs online are made. Use 10 fps for small files and screen recordings, and 20 to 25 fps for fast action such as sports, dance or a pet jumping.
Why does my GIF look grainy or blotchy?
GIFs are limited to 256 colors per frame, so soft gradients get a fine dot pattern. Choose Best under Quality, or crop out large areas of sky or shadow, which are the hardest parts to show with few colors.
Can I turn the GIF back into a video or edit it later?
The GIF you download is a standard file, so you can open it in the PopNow video editor, combine it with other clips and export a video with music. Keep your original video as well, because a GIF cannot be turned back into full quality.
How do I make a GIF for an Instagram or TikTok story?
Pick the Story 9:16 preset or set Crop to 9:16, drag the picture to frame the subject and keep the width at 480 px. Story stickers and messaging apps show GIFs of that size sharply.
Will the GIF play on iPhone, Android and in email?
Yes. GIF works in every modern browser, in iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord and Slack, and in most email apps. A few email clients only show the first frame, so put the key moment at the start.
Is there a limit on how many GIFs I can make?
No. The tool is free and runs on your device, so you can make as many GIFs as you like without an account. Very long or very wide clips need more memory, which is why each GIF is capped at 450 frames.

Before and after: what changes
You start with an ordinary video file from your phone, a screen recording or a clip you made with AI, and finish with a short looping animation that plays inline in any chat or post, with no play button, no sound and no player.
- What changes
- Only the part between the two handles is kept. It is resized to the width you pick, from 240 to 800 px, sampled at your frame rate and reduced to at most 256 colors per frame, the limit of the GIF format. Sound is dropped, because GIFs have no audio track.
- What stays the same
- Timing follows the original at 1× speed, so a 3 second moment stays 3 seconds. Nothing is retouched or regenerated: every frame is a real frame from your video, only scaled, cropped to the ratio you chose and recolored.
- What to look at when you compare
- Watch smooth gradients like skies and skin for banding, and fast motion for choppiness. If gradients look blotchy, switch Quality to Best; if motion stutters, raise Frame rate before you raise Width.
Clips that make great GIFs, and ones that don't
Works well
- A single clear action, such as a laugh, a nod, a dog catching a ball or a door slamming, that reads in under five seconds without sound.
- Locked-off or steady shots with a still background: the encoder only rewrites pixels that change, so these come out sharp and small.
- Screen recordings of an app or a game moment, which have flat colors and stay crisp even with the Small file setting.
Avoid
- Long scenes with dialogue that only make sense with audio. A GIF is silent, so pick a moment whose meaning is in the face or the movement.
- Shaky handheld footage or constant camera pans, where every pixel changes every frame and the file grows fast; lower the width or crop tighter.
- Dark night footage full of noise and fine gradients, which turns into speckles at 256 colors; brighten it first or choose Best quality.
Step by step
- Bring in the clipPress Upload video, drop a file on the page, paste it or open From my library. Videos sent from other PopNow apps arrive here automatically. To build a slideshow, add two or more photos instead.
- Trim the momentDrag the yellow handles on the filmstrip under the preview. The readout shows the start, the end and the selected length, and the preview loops just that part so you can check the timing.
- Set size and motionPick Width and Frame rate, then Speed (0.5× for slow motion, up to 3×), Direction (Forward, Reverse or Boomerang), Crop (Original, 1:1, 4:5, 9:16 or 16:9) and Loop. Drag the picture to reframe a crop.
- Add a captionType in Text on GIF, then choose Classic, Modern, Rounded or Marker letters, Top, Middle or Bottom, and Text size. Long lines wrap and shrink to fit the frame.
- Check the size and exportRead the estimate above Make GIF and adjust if it is over your chat's limit, then press Make GIF. Download GIF saves the file, and Send to opens it in another PopNow app.
How the GIF is built in your browser
- Real frames, picked by time
- A hidden copy of your video jumps to each moment the GIF needs and draws that frame onto a canvas, cropped and scaled. Speed changes the step between moments, not the delay, so 2× skips frames while 0.5× shows the motion slower and smoother.
- A palette for every frame
- A GIF can show 256 colors at a time. Each frame gets its own palette chosen by median cut from that frame's colors, and an ordered dither pattern smooths gradients without the flicker that random dithering causes between frames.
- Only what moved is rewritten
- After the first frame, pixels that barely changed are left transparent so the previous frame shows through, and only the rectangle that changed is stored. That is why a talking-head clip is often half the size of one with a moving camera.
- Encoded off the main thread
- Encoding runs in a Web Worker, a background thread of your browser, so the page stays responsive and you can cancel at any time. Nothing is sent to a server; the finished file is created on your device.
