Duotone Photo Effect

BeforeAfter

Loading the filter…

A duotone throws away the photo's own colors and keeps only light and shadow, then paints the dark parts in one color and the bright parts in another. It's the bold, graphic look you see on festival posters and album covers, and it makes photos from different shoots look like one set.

How to use it

Upload a photo with a clear subject.
Choose a color pair, or set your own Shadows and Highlights colors.
Raise Contrast for a punchier poster, then download.

Use a dark color for shadows and a light one for highlights — swapped, the photo turns into a negative.
High-contrast photos (silhouettes, statues, strong side light) make the strongest duotones.
Use the same pair across a set of photos to make a feed or slide deck feel consistent.

Questions

What is a duotone photo?

A duotone is an image made of just two colors: one for the darkest tones and one for the brightest, with every tone in between blended from the two.

Can I pick exact brand colors?

Yes. Tap the Shadows or Highlights swatch and choose any color, or type its hex code in your browser's color picker.

Does it work on black-and-white photos?

Yes — duotone only uses brightness, so black-and-white photos work just as well as color ones.
