A caricature is a portrait that exaggerates a person's most recognizable features, usually for fun: a bigger head, a wider smile, a more dramatic hairdo, while the person stays instantly recognizable. Wikipedia describes it as "an often humorous rendered image showing the features of its subject in a simplified or exaggerated way." You see them as quick sketches at street fairs, as political cartoons in newspapers, and lately as big-head cartoon portraits made from a photo with AI.
The word comes from the Italian caricare, "to charge or load", so a caricature is, quite literally, an overloaded portrait. Below is a short history, the main kinds you'll come across, and four caricatures we made from one photo on October 17, 2026, with the prompt we typed.
Where caricature comes from
According to Wikipedia's caricature article, some of the earliest caricatures appear in the sketches of Leonardo da Vinci. Annibale Carracci is often credited with inventing the form, though the article calls that a mistake, and the caricatures of the Rococo painter Pier Leone Ghezzi made it popular in European aristocratic circles. In England, William Hogarth (1697–1764) helped turn satirical drawing into an accepted art form, and a later generation that included James Gillray made London a center of political caricature. Gillray's 1805 print The Plumb-pudding in danger, showing Pitt and Napoleon carving up the globe, was voted the most famous of all UK political cartoons.
The two traditions that grew out of this are still with us. One is political: caricatures of politicians in newspapers and magazines. The other is personal: a friendly portrait you get drawn, give as a gift, or hang on the wall.
The main kinds of caricature
- Street and event caricatures. An artist sketches you in a few minutes at a fair, a boardwalk, a wedding or a corporate party. Big head, small body, often with a prop from your hobby.
- Political cartoons. Exaggeration with a point to make, aimed at public figures and published in the press.
- Gift caricatures. Drawn from a photo for birthdays, retirements and weddings, often showing the person's job or passion around them.
- Digital big-head portraits. The style that spread on social media with AI image tools: a polished cartoon of you with an oversized head, surrounded by the things that define your work and hobbies. AI image models can make these from a single photo.
What separates a good caricature from a mean one is where the exaggeration goes. Good caricature artists push the head size, the smile, the pose and the props, and keep what people love about the face. Exaggerating weight, skin color, wrinkles or a feature someone is self-conscious about isn't caricature, it's mockery.
Four caricatures from one photo
We started with an ordinary portrait of a made-up man (generated for this test, so it's nobody real), then asked Nano Banana 2.1, the default model in PopNow's photo editor, for four caricatures in four drawing styles and four jobs.

Office worker · digital cartoon
Chef · ink and marker
Musician · watercolor
Teacher · 3D animatedAll four kept his glasses, beard, hairline and smile, so he's recognizable in every style. The ink-and-marker chef looks most like a real street-fair sketch; the 3D teacher looks like a frame from an animated film. The exaggeration stayed where we asked for it: head size and expression, nothing unflattering.
How to make a caricature from your photo
- Pick a photo with a clear face. Looking roughly at the camera, good light, no sunglasses. A head-and-shoulders shot is ideal.
- Open the AI caricature maker and upload the photo.
- Pick a style, a job and up to three hobbies. Styles include hand-drawn, watercolor, 3D cartoon, magazine cover and pencil sketch; the job and hobbies decide the outfit and the props around you.
- Choose how much to exaggerate. Subtle, classic or bobblehead. Keep 3:4 for a full figure, so the body and props have room.
- Draw it, then try another style. The button shows the price first; one caricature with Nano Banana 2.1 at 1K costs 8 credits. Make two or three and keep your favorite.
Want something the menus don't cover? Our four above were made in the photo editor with a written prompt instead. This is the exact prompt behind the chef:

Turn the man in this photo into a friendly caricature: a big head on a small cartoon body, shown as a full figure, with a big happy smile. Keep him instantly recognizable: same face shape, eyes, glasses, beard, hairstyle and skin tone. Don't exaggerate any feature as a flaw. Style: a hand-drawn street-fair caricature in black ink and alcohol markers on white paper, with bold expressive lines and loose coloring. He is a chef in a white jacket and chef's hat, holding a pan of steaming pasta, with fresh tomatoes and herbs around him. No words or letters anywhere.
Styles to swap into the "Style:" sentence: a polished digital cartoon; a loose watercolor painting; a 3D animated movie character; a graphite pencil sketch; a glossy magazine cover. For the job and hobby sentence, name objects rather than ideas: "a laptop, sticky notes and a coffee mug" draws better than "loves his work".
If you'd like your photo in a different look altogether (film photography, anime, clay and many more), the photo styles page has dozens of ready-made styles, and many of them work directly on your own photo.
FAQ
What is a caricature artist?
A caricature artist draws exaggerated portraits, usually live and fast. Many work at street fairs, boardwalks, weddings and corporate events, finishing a sketch in a few minutes; others draw from photos on commission, or work for newspapers as political cartoonists.
What's the difference between a caricature and a cartoon?
A cartoon is any simplified, often funny drawing. A caricature is a portrait of a specific real person whose features are exaggerated but still recognizable. Every caricature is a kind of cartoon; most cartoons aren't caricatures.
Can AI make a caricature from my photo?
Yes. Upload a clear photo to the AI caricature maker and pick a style, a job and your hobbies, or describe the caricature yourself in a photo editor: big head, style, and the props that show what you do. Our four results above each came from one prompt and one run.
Is it okay to make a caricature of someone else?
Use your own photo or a photo of someone who agreed to it, and keep it kind. A caricature as a gift for a friend is a classic; using someone's face to embarrass them isn't.
How much does an AI caricature cost?
On PopNow one caricature with Nano Banana 2.1 costs 8 credits at 1K, paid per image with no subscription. If a generation fails, the credits go back to your balance.
