How does it get the timing right?
With an LRC file it uses your times directly. Without one it transcribes the song with PopNow and aligns the transcript to your real lyrics word by word, so the words on screen are always yours and only the times come from the transcription. A checker flags overlaps, rushed lines and lines too long for vertical video.
Do I need to pay for anything?
Not for the basic version: with an LRC file and your cover art or the built-in gradient, everything runs on your machine. Background loops, transcription and generated songs are PopNow runs, each quoted before it starts.
Why not just screen-record an animation?
Screen recording drops frames and drifts from the audio. Here each frame is rendered at its exact time and encoded with the song, so the words land on the vocal in the final file.
