Choosing a Topaz Labs model to enlarge, denoise or sharpen
Three tools for photos that need more than a new prompt
The Topaz Labs group holds Topaz Gigapixel, Topaz Bloom and Topaz Denoise & Sharpen. None of them invents a new picture from a prompt. Each one starts from an image you already have and changes its size or its quality. Gigapixel enlarges a photo or graphic to about 4, 16.8 or 67 megapixels with the aspect ratio kept. Bloom also enlarges, but it is a creative upscaler that adds new detail, which suits AI images and illustrations. Denoise & Sharpen keeps the resolution and cleans up grain or blur. Decide first whether the problem is size, noise or softness, then pick the tool.
Precise, generative, transparent or creative
Gigapixel has three kinds of presets. Precise presets such as Standard V2, High Fidelity V3, Low Resolution V2, CGI and Text Refine add pixels without changing what is in the picture, which is the safe choice for products, documents and screenshots. Generative presets such as Wonder 4, Recover 3 and Standard MAX rebuild detail; Wonder 4 can bring back a badly blurred face while keeping the same person, while Redefine adds new detail and may change how a face looks. The transparent preset keeps the alpha channel of a cut-out and always returns a PNG. Bloom offers Bloom 2, Bloom and Bloom Realism, an optional description and a creativity level that controls how much new detail appears.
Plan for time and for the output size
Precise Gigapixel runs usually finish in well under half a minute. Generative presets take longer, a transparent upscale often needs one to two minutes, and Bloom can take several minutes at its slowest preset. Larger tiers produce very large files, so pick 8K only when the picture will be printed or cropped hard. Prices depend on the preset and the tier for Gigapixel and on the tier alone for Bloom; the page for each model lists the current rates. If a photo is both noisy and small, clean it with Denoise & Sharpen first and enlarge the result afterwards.
Quick answers
Which Topaz model should I use for a blurry portrait?
Try a generative Gigapixel preset such as Wonder 4. It rebuilds eyes, hair and skin detail while aiming to keep the same person. Avoid Redefine for real people, because it adds new detail and may change the shape of a face.
What is the difference between Gigapixel and Bloom?
Gigapixel is built to enlarge faithfully, with optional generative presets for damaged photos. Bloom is a creative upscaler that deliberately invents new texture and detail. Use Gigapixel for photos you need to stay accurate, and Bloom for AI art or illustrations you want richer.
Can I keep a transparent background when I upscale?
Yes. Gigapixel has a transparent preset that keeps the alpha channel of a PNG cut-out and always returns a PNG file. Asking for a JPEG with that preset is refused before the job starts, so choose PNG output.
Does Denoise & Sharpen make the image bigger?
No. Denoise & Sharpen returns the photo at its original resolution, up to 24 megapixels. It removes grain with Denoise Max or fixes blur with a sharpen preset. Enlarge the cleaned result afterwards with Gigapixel or the upscaler if you need more pixels.
How long does a Topaz upscale take?
Precise presets usually take ten to twenty seconds. Generative presets take from about twenty seconds to a minute, transparent upscales one to two minutes, and Bloom between about one and five minutes depending on the preset. Larger output tiers can add time.
