To make a family crest, choose a shield, two contrasting colors and one symbol that represents something your family values, then add a short motto. PopNow's coat of arms maker turns those choices into an original design you can download. It creates new artwork rather than finding historical arms attached to your surname.
What is a family crest, and what do its parts mean?
People often call the whole design a family crest. In heraldry, the crest is specifically the device above the helmet; the shield carries the arms. The Court of the Lord Lyon's Crests guidance makes this distinction (read October 29, 2026); this overview of a coat of arms shows how the parts fit together.
The shield is the main surface, its background is the field, and the figures placed on it are charges. Tinctures are the heraldic colors, metals and furs. A motto is a short saying, often shown on a scroll; it can be in your own language. You do not need a helmet, animals beside the shield or a Latin sentence to make a clear modern family emblem.
The College of Arms' Resources page, checked October 29, 2026, explains that arms belong to particular individuals and families rather than surnames generally. Treat a name search as the beginning of research, never proof that a design belongs to everyone with that name. Our three family crest examples below use invented family identities and make no ancestry claim.
How do you choose symbols and colors that mean something?
- Write down one value. Choose a word such as learning, resilience or adventure. Use it to narrow the design before choosing decorations.
- Choose one main charge. A book can represent your household's love of reading; an oak can represent roots; a ship can recall journeys. These are meanings you give your new design, not a universal historical code.
- Build contrast. Gold and silver are the two main heraldic metals, conventionally shown as yellow and white. Blue, red, green, black and purple are colors. A useful starting rule puts a metal charge on a colored field, or the reverse; tincture conventions) explain the broader system and its exceptions (read October 29, 2026).
- Keep the layout simple. Start with an undivided field and one large symbol. A busy shield may look impressive at full size but become unreadable on a small card.
PopNow offers symbolic suggestions, but family crest meaning comes from your explanation. Write a sentence to accompany a gift: “We chose an oak for the home we keep growing together.” That tells the recipient more than a list claiming that every green shield has one fixed meaning.
How do you make a family crest in PopNow?
- Set the shape and colors. Choose Shield, Field color and Division. Heater gives a pointed base; Plain leaves one uninterrupted field. Leave Symbol color on Auto for a contrasting starting choice.
- Add the symbol and words. Choose Main symbol, Above the shield and optional Supporters. Under Motto, choose a saying or Write my own. Use Family name (optional) for the name ribbon; keep both name and motto short.
- Choose the finish. Classic gives a painted heraldic look, Modern flat simplifies the artwork, and Engraving uses black ink. In More options, the default model is GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst and the default quality is HD, at 2K.
- Create and check. Press Create my crest and review the price on that button before starting. Read the name and motto letter by letter, check the symbol and ensure the whole shield fits before downloading.
We generated the three designs below on October 29, 2026 with the tool's exact prompt-building function, GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, medium rendering quality, 2K and a square frame. These are direct model calls using the same choices, rather than screenshots of a browser session. Each prompt card preserves the actual instruction and parameters; an image styled like a vector emblem is still a raster image.
What do three original family crest examples look like?
Alderwick: roots and shared growth
For the invented Alderwick household, we chose Oak tree on Green (Vert), Plain, no decoration above the shield, no supporters and Modern flat. The gold oak stands for the roots this fictional household wants to nurture; GROW TOGETHER is its own motto. This is our design story, not a claim about a historical Alderwick family. We rejected the first output because it added a helmet and side animals, then used Add a detail to exclude those ornaments. The kept result is simpler, though some light shading remains despite the flat-style request.

A flat 2D vector logo of an original heraldic coat of arms, drawn as a minimal modern flat vector emblem, like a crisp logo: simple geometric shapes, thick even outlines, flat solid colors only, no gradients, no shading, no texture and no fine detail. The shield: a classic heater-shaped shield (flat top, curved sides meeting in a point at the base), a single field of green (Vert). The main charge, centered on the shield and filling it well: an oak tree with spreading branches and acorns in gold (Or). Nothing above the shield. Lettering: a small ribbon above everything that reads exactly "ALDERWICK", and a flowing scroll banner below the shield that reads exactly "GROW TOGETHER" in clean classic serif capital letters; spell every word exactly as written, and no other words, letters or numbers anywhere. Keep every part, including the helm, mantling and supporters, in the same flat minimal icon style with at most five flat colors: no shading, no highlights, no texture, no gradients, no fine detail, no realistic metal. Perfectly symmetrical, centered composition with the whole emblem fully visible and a generous margin around it, crisp clean edges, on a plain pure white background with no shadow, no scenery, no border and no watermark. Also: Only the shield and two lettering ribbons; omit helmets, mantling, side animals and all ornament. Use solid flat fills with no shading.
Brindfell: courage with a traditional finish
The invented Brindfell design uses a gold Lion on Blue (Azure), Classic style and a Helm. The selected Latin motto, Fortitudo et honor, is the tool's Strength and honor option. We use the lion for courage; the blue-and-gold contrast keeps the central figure easy to read. The little figure above the helmet is the crest in the narrower heraldic sense.

An original heraldic coat of arms, drawn as a classic, richly detailed heraldic painting: bold black outlines, flat heraldic colors with subtle shading and gold highlights. The shield: a classic heater-shaped shield (flat top, curved sides meeting in a point at the base), a single field of blue (Azure). The main charge, centered on the shield and filling it well: a lion rampant (standing on its hind legs, facing left, claws raised) in gold (Or). Above the shield, a steel knight's helm facing forward, with flowing leafy mantling in blue (Azure) and gold (Or) spreading down both sides of the shield, and a small lion rampant as the crest on top of the helm. Lettering: a small ribbon above everything that reads exactly "BRINDFELL", and a flowing scroll banner below the shield that reads exactly "Fortitudo et honor" in clean classic serif capital letters; spell every word exactly as written, and no other words, letters or numbers anywhere. Perfectly symmetrical, centered composition with the whole emblem fully visible and a generous margin around it, crisp clean edges, on a plain pure white background with no shadow, no scenery, no border and no watermark.
Merevale: a shared journey
For the invented Merevale household, we chose Ship on Red (Gules), Plain and Classic, with nothing above the shield and no supporters. ONWARD TOGETHER makes the journey theme clear. Keeping the extra ornaments out gives the ship and lettering more room; check every sail and the banner before ordering any physical print.

An original heraldic coat of arms, drawn as a classic, richly detailed heraldic painting: bold black outlines, flat heraldic colors with subtle shading and gold highlights. The shield: a classic heater-shaped shield (flat top, curved sides meeting in a point at the base), a single field of red (Gules). The main charge, centered on the shield and filling it well: a sailing ship with full sails on stylized waves in gold (Or). Nothing above the shield. Lettering: a small ribbon above everything that reads exactly "MEREVALE", and a flowing scroll banner below the shield that reads exactly "ONWARD TOGETHER" in clean classic serif capital letters; spell every word exactly as written, and no other words, letters or numbers anywhere. Perfectly symmetrical, centered composition with the whole emblem fully visible and a generous margin around it, crisp clean edges, on a plain pure white background with no shadow, no scenery, no border and no watermark.
How can you compare models and use the finished design?
For a same-prompt, different-models check, keep the shield, wording and frame unchanged and use Compare. Nano Banana 2.1 is the tool's alternative; its 2K image generation costs 72 credits. We did not generate that second-model test for this article, so these samples do not establish a model ranking. Sunburst prices depend on rendering quality and frame as well as resolution; use the actual generation button for the quote.
Download PNG on white for a simple print, or use Transparent background and inspect the edges before choosing Transparent PNG. The Flag, Mug and Signet ring views are browser-made previews, not physical products or guarantees of engraving detail. Try a small test print first. If your actual goal is a recognizable personal avatar rather than a household emblem, the profile picture maker is a more direct starting point.
FAQ
What is a family crest?
In everyday use it often means the entire family emblem. In heraldry it means the device above the helmet. The shield and its charges are separate parts of the wider arrangement, so it helps to say which part you mean when commissioning artwork.
Does my surname have a specific coat of arms?
A surname alone does not establish entitlement to particular arms. Research the relevant person, place and documented descent through an appropriate heraldic or genealogical source. This maker creates an original image and does not search historical registers or grant arms.
What do family coat of arms symbols mean?
Meaning depends on the particular design and its history. For a new decorative emblem, choose an association you can explain: a book for learning, an oak for roots or a ship for travel. Avoid presenting those choices as fixed definitions applying to every historical example.
Can I write a motto in English instead of Latin?
Yes. Choose Write my own and enter the wording you want printed, or switch Print in to English for a listed saying. Custom wording is printed as entered rather than automatically translated. A few clear words usually leave more space for readable letters.
How much does it cost to make a family crest?
The generation button shows the quote for your chosen model and settings. The prompt cards here use Sunburst at medium quality, 2K and 1:1; background removal and mockup assembly happen locally at no extra cost. Check the lettering in the original file before paying a separate print supplier.
