Choosing Ideogram for text-led logos and SVG output

Two endpoints, both returning SVG

Ideogram Vector 1.0 exposes two endpoints, and both return an SVG rather than a raster file. The text-to-image endpoint, called text-to-image in the catalog, takes a prompt of up to 9500 characters and draws a new vector from it. The image-edit endpoint, called image-edit, takes an existing JPEG, PNG or WebP picture of up to 50 MB and traces it into an SVG. Both responses carry the image/svg+xml content type, and PopNow sanitizes the markup before it is returned. Choose the endpoint by the source you already have: a written brief goes to text-to-image, and a finished sketch or photo goes to image-edit.

Use it where the words must be right

Ideogram is the model to reach for when the output carries lettering: a logo with a wordmark, a short tagline on a badge, or a label that has to stay legible. Because the result is vector, the type stays sharp at any size, which matters for favicons, signage and print. For a symbol with no text, a style-driven vector model from the Recraft family is usually the cheaper choice. Keep the text in the prompt short, quote the exact words you need, and check spelling in the returned file itself, since a single wrong letter is the most common defect in lettered output and is easy to miss in a thumbnail.

Set quality and references on purpose

Quality is the main cost lever for text-to-image. Each image is billed at $0.174 on low, $0.216 on medium, which is the default, and $0.264 on high. A high-quality job with reference images attached is billed at $0.432 per image. Use reference_image_urls, up to five URLs, to pass style or composition references; the first reference counts most. Explore layouts on medium, test wording on low when you only need a rough check, and reserve high with references for the file you will deliver. A generation takes between 15 and 60 seconds, so run candidates as asynchronous tasks, store the task identifier, and show the user a pending state instead of holding an HTTP request open.

Wire the call into a logo pipeline

Always pass aspect_ratio explicitly. The text-to-image endpoint accepts 17 ratios, and relying on a default makes it harder to reproduce a result later. Square works for app icons, while a wider ratio suits a horizontal lockup. Store the returned SVG as delivered, and keep the prompt, quality, aspect ratio and reference URLs beside it, so a reviewer can regenerate the same brief at another tier without guessing the settings. On the image-edit path, pick detailed, the default, when the source has fine strokes or texture that must survive, and simple when you want fewer, larger shapes that are easier to recolor. Both detail levels cost the same, so the choice should depend only on the result you need.

Never embed SVG that users upload without filtering it in your own pipeline.
