About Relight

Describe new lighting and get the same photo relit.

Call it with the model name popnow/relight-v1/edit on POST /jobs/createTask, from 30 credits per image ($0.03).

Introduction

Relight changes the light in a photo. Describe the light you want and get the same people and scene back, lit that way: window light at sunset, blue hour, a hard overhead spotlight or a golden rim from behind. Nothing else in the frame is meant to change.

Key features

Light from a sentence

Write the source, direction, colour and hardness. The tool runs Qwen-Image-Edit-2509 with dx8152's Relight LoRA, trained on before-and-after relighting pairs, so it moves light and shadow rather than repainting the picture.

People and framing stay

Faces, clothes, pose and composition were unchanged in every test; only light, shadows and colour grade moved, which keeps a relit photo usable next to the original in a set.

Bigger mood shifts

A white dance studio became a dark room with one spotlight, and a misty dawn shore became a golden sunset with rim light.

Use cases

Rescue flat photos

Add direction and mood to evenly lit portraits and product shots that came out of a softbox or an overcast day looking lifeless.

Time of day

Move a location photo to blue hour or golden hour without going back to the location, for example a salt flat at blue hour with the truck lights on.

One look for a set

Bring photos taken in different light to one consistent look for a campaign, a lookbook or a carousel.

Prompt guide & pro tips

Start with "Relight the image with"

Then name the light source and where it comes from. Specific beats vague: "a single hard spotlight from directly above" works better than "dramatic".

Remove old shadows first

If the photo already has hard shadows, run Shadow Remover first and relight the clean result.

Expect props for motivated light

Asking for window light can add a window to the scene. If you do not want new objects, describe light only ("warm light from the left").

Change one thing per run

Ask for one light setup at a time. When a result is close, keep the seed and adjust only the colour or the direction in the prompt, so you can compare the two versions side by side.

API quick start

Call the Relight API in three steps

  1. Create an API key. Sign in to PopNow and create a key in the API console. Keys start with sk-popnow- and use the same credits as the website.
  2. Send the request. POST /jobs/createTask with model popnow/relight-v1/edit and an input object that follows the parameter table. The response returns a task ID straight away.
  3. Get the result. Poll GET /jobs/recordInfo with the task ID, or pass a callBackUrl and we post the result to it. Download the output links when the task succeeds.
# 1. Create the task. Keep the Idempotency-Key if you retry after a network error.
export IDEMPOTENCY_KEY="$(uuidgen)"
curl -X POST https://api.popnow.ai/api/v1/jobs/createTask \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $POPNOW_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Idempotency-Key: $IDEMPOTENCY_KEY" \
  -d '{
  "model": "popnow/relight-v1/edit",
  "input": {
    "prompt": "A ceramic teapot on a linen cloth, soft window light, muted palette",
    "image_url": "https://media.popnow.ai/influencer/examples/marco.webp",
    "output_format": "jpeg"
  }
}'

# 2. Copy data.taskId from the response, then poll until state is succeeded, failed, canceled or expired.
TASK_ID="TASK_ID_FROM_RESPONSE"
curl "https://api.popnow.ai/api/v1/jobs/recordInfo?taskId=$TASK_ID" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $POPNOW_API_KEY"

Replace the prompt and any links with your own. The API tab has the response, polling and callback reference.

Relight API questions

How much does the Relight API cost?

Relight costs 30 credits ($0.03) per image. Credits are the same as on the website (1 credit = $0.001), and failed tasks are refunded.

What is the model name for Relight in the API?

Put popnow/relight-v1/edit for Relight in the model field of POST /jobs/createTask.

How should I describe the light?

Name the source, the direction, the colour and how hard it is: "warm golden sunset light coming through a window on the left, hard light with window-frame shadows" or "a single hard spotlight from directly above in a dark studio".

Will the person or pose change?

No. In our runs faces, outfits, poses and framing stayed; only the light, the colour grade and the shadows changed.

Can it change day to night?

Yes, within reason. A midday salt-flat photo became blue hour with the truck's headlights glowing, and a misty dawn shore became a golden sunset.

What does the Relight LoRA add?

With the same photo, prompt and seed, the LoRA gave harder, more directional light and window-pane patterns on the wall, where the base model made a softer change.

What are the limits of the Relight API?

Aspect ratios: 1:1 · 16:9 · 9:16 · 4:3 · 3:4 · 3:2 +3; Prompt length (characters): 1,000; Largest upload: 10 MB. Requests outside these limits are rejected before anything is charged.

Can I try Relight without writing code?

Yes. The Playground runs Relight on your PopNow credits, needs no API key, and shows the matching code for every run.
